Being Professional = Not showing emotions?
Women have been led to believe that being professional means not showing emotion at work.
No, it’s far better to shove all those emotions down. With food. With alcohol. With exercise. Well, just about any addiction is more acceptable than showing emotion in the workplace.
Yet, leaders are penalized for not being human, not having EQ and not showing empathy.
We all have emotions and we can’t check them at the door when we arrive at work because emotions are intrinsic to being human.
This dichotomy is outdated. It’s time to update the paradigm because we can’t have it both ways.
We all have emotions and we can’t check them at the door when we arrive at work because emotions are intrinsic to being human.
As humans with emotions those emotions get triggered, often at unexpected times, by unexpected things in unexpected ways.
Interestingly, the ones labeled “too emotional,” often are the best at being compassionate, empathetic and have greater EQ. Yet, most people struggle to maintain their composure when strong emotions are unexpectedly triggered resulting in what is best described as an “emotional outburst.”
Being professional actually lies in how we handle ourselves when we are triggered and how compassionate we are with others when it happens to them.
You don’t need trigger warnings or to avoid things that trigger you to prevent emotional outbursts nor do you need to keep stuffing those feelings down.
Being professional actually lies in how we handle ourselves when we are triggered and how compassionate we are with others when it happens to them.
It’s possible to release the emotional charge of the triggers themselves. Once you do this, you no longer have to worry about:
Being viewed as or penalized for being “too emotional”
Overreacting when faced with a known or unknown trigger
Having an emotional outburst
Avoiding your triggers
Helping you remain cool, calm and present, able to be resourceful and focused on the situation at hand is what I help my clients with in Heal the Leader, my signature 1:1 program. This program is designed for female leaders at all levels who feel unvalued, unheard or overlooked in a male-dominated work environment and powerless to change it. You have the experience, education, knowledge and skills to see how your organization REALLY works and you know what to change to make things work even better, but you and your ideas are overlooked because someone important sees you as too emotional.
During the 16 weeks of the program, we will work together to identify your triggers and the beliefs that are holding you back so that you feel like and are viewed as the professional you are. Using a variety of leading edge techniques based on neuroscience, I’ll guide you through a process to release those beliefs and the strong emotions behind your triggers. Finally, we will remove what is blocking you from believing and KNOWING you are enough, unleashing your confidence and your voice so that you are able to go after exactly what you want!
After you release the powerful emotions and beliefs behind your triggers, you’ll find:
You confidently state your position and share your thoughts where you once would have held back
Your energy soars because its no longer drained from the stress of trying to keep your emotions in check
You build yourself up with yourself talk rather than take yourself down with it
You release the beliefs about yourself that have been holding you back
You choose to respond and respond differently to situations that used to send you into a tail spin
You value yourself enough to walk away from situations and people that aren’t aligned with you and your values
If you’re ready to shed the label of being “too emotional” and really be able to be cool, calm, present, resourceful and focused no matter what is going on around you, DM me.
Once I receive it, I’lll send you a few application questions over email or Facebook messenger. Based on your answers, if you’re a good fit (I work with a small number of select women at a time to ensure high touch service and attention), then l’ll invite you into the program and we can get you started by February.
